Because, on the tube at least, it shows human beings at their best. People from all walks of life are are all in the same boat (or train carriage) in conditions that they’d have every right to find intolerable. Squashed in like sardines, they endure delays, distress and discomfort. And yet those millions of journeys are almost all completed without fuss or complaint, with passengers displaying kindness, consideration and courtesy towards one another. And, as this beautiful song suggests, show me anyone who claims never to have seen a fellow commuter whom they’ve found heartstoppingly attractive, and I’ll show you a liar.
Why I love the rush hour.
