Not for the music – not my thing – I only listened for this intro. Alan Freeman was one of the greatest broadcasters who ever lived. He started on the BBC around 1960 but by 1977 his career seemed over. At 50, he was seen as past it and was let go by Radio 1. He was was out of work for years until Capital Radio brought him back and introduced him to a new generation of listeners. A few years later, he made a triumphant return to Radio 1. In the late 90s, I was at the Sony Radio Awards when he won a Gold for his Friday Night Rock Show on Virgin Radio. He was living in an old people’s home and collected his gong on a zimmer frame. Could bland, faceless commercial radio now do with a broadcaster as loved as universally adored as Fluff? One who could command a majestic intro like this? Not ‘arf.
