She was quite posh, lived in Fulham and was never really my girlfriend. But we used to go out occasionally and always to places she didn’t usually go. I took her to QPR, I took her late night shopping for soul CDs at Tower Records which was open till midnight then on for even later-night beigels in Brick Lane. She was the only person who’d come with me to see Tom Jones at the Hammersmith Odeon when he was still dreadfully uncool. I heard this on the radio this morning, thought of that concert and wondered whether she still lives in Hong Kong. And if so, whether she ever misses the green green grass of home.
She married a Frenchman and fled to Hong Kong.
