First bank holiday of the year so would you have travelled by motorbike or scooter to the seaside for a tear-up with the opposing tribe? Having had several Vespas, my answer would have to be Mod. There was a Mod revival when I was at school which meant parkas over blazers, ties pulled skinny and straight and discovering forgotten 45s like this one. Oxfam shops were scoured for narrow-lapelled suits but on Talbot Road in Notting Hill, there was an old West Indian tailor called Cliff Fullerton. In his musty old shop, I found a silver-grey tonic suit that he’d made in the 60s for a customer who’d never returned to collect it. It was far too big but Cliff took it in for me and I took home the bargain of a lifetime. I wish I still had that suit though now I wish he hadn’t it taken in.
Would you have been a mod or a rocker?
