I met my friend Robin Easterby this morning for breakfast at a cafe in Kensal Rise called Gracelands. We were surrounded by young mums sipping artisan lattes, with toddlers either sitting with colouring books or in 4×4 buggies. When I was child, I told him, the mummies of Kensal Rise were far from yummy. They were largely Irish, quite fierce and adept at keeping five or six kids in order with a good clip round the ear. All very different now, though songs have long used the word “mama” to describe an attractive woman. In this one, I don’t think he’s referring to anyone’s mother. Unless, of course, he was in Kensal Rise this morning.
When did Mummies become yummy?
