Is, of course, nothing new. In the 70s, a telephone service called Dial-a-Disc was hugely popular. Every day, millions of people would dial 160 to hear a song from that week’s Top 20. They had no idea what it was going to be but that only added to the excitement. I remember going to the phone box at the end of our street, inserting 2p and hearing this. I don’t think I’ve heard it since. But listening to it again, I can now appreciate how good it is, and how extraordinarily weird. It cheerfully tells the tale of a housewife who abandons her husband and children to dance naked in a New Orleans strip joint. Try to relate any of this to anyone under 35, and I guarantee they will not believe you.
