76 in a 40 so I can hardly complain. In my defence, I was high up on the flyover over Staples Corner, causing no danger to anyone. But the Old Bill and a laser gun were waiting for me as I came down. When they asked why I was going so fast, I told them I was just enjoying myself. Drivers now have to suffer so many restrictions – speed humps, cameras, pinch points, bus lanes and hundreds of unnecessary traffic lights that it’s no wonder that an empty three lane carriageway can prove such a temptation. They nodded sympathetically, handed me my ticket but sportingly stopped short of sending me to court where, for that speed, I’d probably have been banned. There was something about this encounter that made me feel 19 again so as I drove (very slowly) away, this was the tune in my head.
