Happy Birthday to Steve Wright – 62 yesterday. Steve Wright in the Afternoon is a national institution. First on Radio 1 in the 80s and early 90s, and on Radio 2 for the last fifteen years. For such a friendly, inventive and garrulous presenter, Steve Wright remains a strangely elusive figure. Never on TV, seldom interviewed – most people last saw him presenting Top of the Pops back in the 80s as a skinny, bespectacled geek. Since then, he’s put on a colossal amount of weight, as was evident from some photos published rather spitefully by the Daily Mail. But instead of chuckling gleefully, even Daily Mail readers were outraged. They “love the show, Steve” so how dare the Mail portray this private and harmless man so cruelly. Never a DJ particularly associated with music, it’s hard to think of a track for Steve Wright. So maybe one by someone who shares his surname.
