And this particular round has been very special for underdogs trouncing overdogs. The mighty Manchester City, Premier League champions, were humbled 2-0 at home by Middlesborough. Even more shocking was Chelsea, Premier League leaders, losing 4-2 to lowly Bradford City. And that came after Man Utd were held to a 0-0 draw by even lowlier Cambridge United. These three big sides embody all that’s wrong with a game now awash with obscene amounts of money distributed less equally than ever. So these results are even more unexpected and joyous. This is a dreadful track but those first 23 oh-so-appropriate seconds remind us that “FA” doesn’t just mean “Football Association”. It can mean what Chelsea and Manchester City got from today’s games.
Oh, the romance of the FA Cup.
