Since his death yesterday, the musical legacy of Maurice White has undergone a sudden re-appraisal. Maurice (always pronounced Mo-reece) White was the leader of Earth, Wind & Fire and the fact that they were one of the greatest and most musically accomplished bands ever is being hastily acknowledged. But I’m pretty certain the cultural commentators now worshipping White were the very punk and new wave kids who sneered at Earth, Wind & Fire in their heyday. I just know they weren’t at Wembley Arena to witness Maurice White orchestrate a series of magnificent live performances. I was, white socks and all. I’ve loved them since the 70s and still have the vinyl copy of I Am bought for me by my very first girlfriend. And when I’m getting ready to go out on a Saturday night, although I no longer splash on the Blue Stratos, I always, always play this.
And Suddenly they’re all Earth, Wind & Fire fans.
