The Ambassador’s Party, that is, with the death yesterday of Michele Ferrero. His inspired combination of chocolate and hazelnuts led first to Nutella and then to Ferrero Rocher chocolates. But he and his company will always be remembered for The Ambassador’s Party, that famously dreadful and much-lampooned TV commercial. We laughed derisively at it but Ferrero himself could not understand why. He honestly believed that it was the height of sophistication and good taste. The Ambassador’s Party attained cult status in the UK because it was so bad it was good. It is one of the most famous ads ever made and the chocolates the ambassador served to his guests sold in their millions. Michele Ferrero died a billionaire – the richest man in Italy. So really, who had the last laugh?
The party’s over.
