But he hasn’t. Rod Stewart is just doing what he’s always done. He’s singing songs, and singing them brilliantly. He was always a great interpreter of other people’s songs, like First Cut is The Deepest and Handbags & Gladrags. And he’s just kept doing it. Yes, he was spectacularly naff in the 80s, living in LA and making some truly awful records but spectacularly successful too. The career may have dipped after that but he stuck to his guns and kept singing. His genius has always been to match his attitude and material to his age and his voice. Bryan Ferry and Robbie Williams went for the standards too early but Rod timed it just right. So now he’s selling more albums than ever, proving that you’re never too old to look good, sound great and have a wonderful time.
