When I was about ten, my bohemian eldest sister was living with about eight other free spirits in a big scruffy flat in Belsize Park. Two of her flatmates, Peter and Jonathan, were the first gay couple I ever met. Not that I realised. They shared a bed but so did Morecambe & Wise. Peter and Jonathan wrote horror films and the star of their latest, The Creeping Flesh, was at the flat one day. He was a tall, slightly sinister looking man called Chris. A couple of years later, I saw him again – this time playing Scaramanga, the Bond villain in The Man With the Golden Gun. “Chris” was Christopher Lee, who died today, aged 93. The Man With The Golden Gun has probably the worst Bond theme ever, so let’s play the theme from the following 007 film. Because when it came to playing Dracula, nobody did it better than “Chris”.
