….but one particular portrait gave me the creeps. It was of Mitch Winehouse, Amy’s father. There is no deeper tragedy than the loss of a child but something about this man has always made me feel uneasy. When Amy was alive, he was accused of cashing in on her success, especially when he made a Channel 4 documentary about her, while trying to launch his own career as a jazz crooner. He’s continued to do that since her death, constantly placing himself in the spotlight, which could be why that portrait of him made me feel a bit ooky. At the same exhibition, there’s a portrait of Doreen Lawrence, whose quiet dignity could not have presented a greater contrast. So let’s remind ourselves of the only reason we’ve even heard of Mitch Winehouse.
