…was Jeremy Miles. I met him on my first day at my first job and I liked him immediately. The people I’d thitherto thought were posh were just suburban strivers from Pinner and Northwood who played golf and polished their Ford Granadas on a Sunday morning. But Jeremy was the real deal – flat in town, house in the country and almost illegal levels of charm and style. I hadn’t seen him for years but we had lunch yesterday at The Ivy Club. The venue says it all, a discreet private members’ club with a restaurant I didn’t even know existed. He’s terrific company and I was reminded that “posh” and “working class” people have always got on famously, neither having the pushy anxieties of those in the middle. With an election looming, voters may have many reasons to dislike David Cameron. Though for most, his “poshness” really won’t be one of them.
