Soho came to a standstill yesterday for the funeral of Bernie Katz, the “Prince of Soho”. For more than twenty years, this tiny, flamboyant and hugely charismatic man was front of house at the Groucho Club. Bernie was perhaps the most recognisable character in a area chock-full of recognisable characters. And they all turned out in force for a joyous celebration of his life. I joined my friend Kevin Bishop in the procession but although I knew a lot of people there, I didn’t really know the deceased, so I ducked out after a few minutes. This eclectic collection of actors, artists, bohos and eccentrics, all following an elaborate horse-drawn carriage and New Orleans-style jazz band reminded me why I love Soho so much. And to be eternally remembered as “The Prince” of London’s most un-square mile is one hell of an epitaph.
The Prince of Soho.
