Until yesterday, I was working on the tills at Sainsbury’s in Muswell Hill. Along with practically every other customer of the store. For years, we’ve been manning the self-service checkouts and we weren’t even getting paid. Not any more. I’ve handed in my notice. If we all quit our zero-hours, zero-salary jobs, greedy supermarkets will be forced to re-employ human beings, leaving the self-service tills for “Five items or fewer”. Initially, it will mean standing in line for a little longer but it’s a matter of principle. Sooner or later, they’ll do something. They won’t like seeing fewer and fewer items in the bagging area. Unexpected or otherwise.
I’ve quit my job.
