Is Sounds of the Sixties on Radio 2. It’s a Saturday morning staple on their schedule and this week Brian Matthew celebrated 25 years as presenter. He was already 61 when he began and I love the fact that he’s now 86 and still in the chair. His early 1960s heyday on the Light Programme, when he was first to introduce The Beatles, The Kinks and The Rolling Stones was way before my time, as is practically every record he plays. But a lot of them are rare gems that you wouldn’t hear anywhere else, usually requested by OAP ex-hippies or septuagenarian ex-mods. I was trying to decide which record best demonstrates the sound of Brian Matthew’s sixties and I think it has to be this.
The one radio programme that makes me feel young.
