…the reason I was able to write anything that could be seen on TV, radio or in print was David Abbott. He gave me my first job as runner in a small ad agency that grew to become the largest in the UK. And that was largely down to Abbott. Few would dispute that he was the kindest man and finest writer the industry has ever produced. He died yesterday and it’s upset me far more than I thought it would. Many words will be written about the words he’s written but from a purely personal point of view, I owe him everything. I can’t remember what music he liked but my friend Brian Jones reminded me that this elegant and cultured man loved Cole Porter and Ella Fitzgerald. So on a sad but beautiful day, this combination of his two favourites seems very appropriate.
