I was out last night with my friend Micky. He never changes. Still rail-thin with rock star hair and Ray-Bans, Mick’s led the sort of life that makes you feel you haven’t lived at all. He had a mate who was a serious drug dealer. Not only that but this bloke was own best customer. Micky was worried about him, called round to his flat and found him dead on the floor. For some reason, he was wearing a waterproof Walkman. Micky called the police but not before he’d removed the walkman from the corpse and put it in his coat pocket. “Well”, he reasoned, “It’s what he would have wanted” So this is for Micky, who loves old soul music, and for the dear departed drug dealer. I imagine it’s exactly the sort of stuff that got played on that bright yellow Walkman.
Do you remember waterproof Walkmans?
