I’m talking about Don Covay who passed away on Friday. You may not have heard of him but Mick certainly had. If you ever wondered how a middle-class white boy from Kent ended up sounding like a black American from South Carolina, just listen to this. Don Covay was not a big star but was clearly a huge influence on Mick Jagger’s vocal style. Some might say the latter was a carbon copy of the former, especially when they hear the words “19th Nervous Breakdown” in this song’s first line. What is without doubt is that Don Covay was absolutely “critical” in helping Mick Jagger become one of the richest and most successful rock stars of all time.
RIP The real Mick Jagger.
