I was in Bethnal Green this morning and saw an exhibition about the Kray Twins entitled “Legend”, to tie in with the forthcoming biopic also called “Legend” with Tom Hardy playing both twins. I’ve always found them fascinating but don’t buy the old “They was good boys, only ever hurt their own” mantra. That may have been true once they were big-shot gangsters but how do you think they got started? They were the playground bullies, the violent thugs who terrorised innocent shopkeepers and progressed from there. According to my sister’s father in law, who knew them, “It was like VE-Day when those two went down”. “Legend” means something based on truth which strays into myth. Perfect for a film about Ron & Reg. But let’s remember the other once famous K twins, around the same age as the Krays, but about whom a film called Legend is unlikely to be made.
