Who died in New York this afternoon aged 81. Born in Brooklyn, she was the embodiment of the wise cracking New York broad and I loved her. I saw her fabulous one woman show one Sunday night in Shaftesbury Avenue around 1992 and I think that my date and I were possibly the only heterosexuals in the audience. Joan Rivers had a huge gay following, as did Blossom Dearie, another wise-cracking East Coast broad. I’d loved to have seen her play those smoky Manhattan jazz clubs in the early 60s but I have to remember how lucky I was to have seen one legendary gay icon from New York.
Sad about Joan Rivers.
