Brian Matthew presents Sounds of the 60s on Radio 2 because that decade was his heyday as a radio presenter. For the same reason, Johnnie Walker presents Sounds of the 70s. But Sounds of the 80s is presented by Sara Cox. Why? She didn’t join Radio 1 until 2000 and has no connection with the 80s. So which 1980s radio star should be presenting it? Steve Wright? He already has two shows. Mike Read? His association with UKIP means the BBC will have done to him what he did to Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Mike Smith? Sadly, no longer with us. Ah, I know. Step forward, “Whoo” Gary Davies. Naff but likeable and immensely popular, Gary Davies was the archetypal 1980s Radio 1 DJ. Let’s start a campaign to bring him back in place of the awful Sara Cox. And here’s a great 80s track which, like Gary, no longer seems to be heard on air.
