This morning Shaun Keaveny hosted the BBC 6 Music breakfast show for final time. Droll, intelligent and very funny, he’s to be replaced by Lauren Laverne. Meanwhile, on Radio 2, Chris Evans is to be replaced by Zoe Ball and Simon Mayo by Sara Cox. As everybody knows, the BBC is pursuing a blatantly discriminatory policy of “getting more female voices” on to primetime radio, regardless of whether they’re talented enough to be there. I have no problem with female presenters. Vanessa Feltz, when she sits in for Jeremy Vine, is far better than he is. I also think Fiona Bruce will be much better on Question Time than David Dimbleby. But Lauren Laverne, Zoe Ball and Sara Cox simply aren’t as good as the presenters whose jobs they’ve just been given. Those male presenters had to earn their shows through hard work and talent. Sadly, it now seems different for girls.
Shaun Keaveny’s last show.
