Incredible that in 2015, we still have a programme called “Woman’s Hour”. Dated, patronising and sexist, it implies that women needn’t worry their pretty little heads about the rest of Radio 4’s output. That’s for those brainy men, but here’s an hour for you ladies filled with recipes and knitting patterns. Of course it’s nothing like that – it’s worse. Issues relevant to everyone are skewed to suggest that they only apply to women. Woman’s Hour? Seriously, aren’t we beyond that now? Did feminism never happen? Over the summer we’ve also had “Late Night Woman’s Hour” where the content has apparently been a bit racy. Heavens above, whatever next? Women getting the vote? Or refusing to do the ironing? This sexist, self-pitying dirge was laughed at when it was a hit. But forty years on, it sounds exactly like an item from Woman’s Hour.
