A wonderfully evocative collection of pictures that go back to an era that I don’t remember right up to a time that I do. And I realised that one of the things I miss most about the new Soho are the old-style prostitutes. Brassy, friendly cockneys who reminded me of Nancy in Oliver Twist. I’m probably remembering those working girls with rose-tinted spectacles, but I still miss them. Some would often come in for a drink around 1am at the nightclubs where I worked once they’d finished their shift. They’ve long been supplanted by a few cold-eyed East Europeans saying “You vont messarge?”. Oh dear, this doesn’t look good. I’m sounding like someone who longs for the days when there were more women on the streets. And a racist to boot. Perhaps I should run for president of the United States.
