It took him 15 minutes on the tube. He could have gone to Durham, Edinburgh, Trinity College Dublin or Girton College, Cambridge but no, he just couldn’t leave our capital city and now resides in the UCL halls just off Tottenham Court Road. He may not have got his brains from me, but he’s certainly inherited my irrational attachment to London. I’ve never lived anywhere else. Though I do sometimes wonder whether I should have been more geographically adventurous. But then I think of the millions of people – especially now – who’ve travelled thousands of miles to live in the most exciting and vibrant city in the world and have to conclude that I was extraordinarily fortunate to have been born and bred here. My son feels the same way. Which is why he now lives about ten minutes from this.
My son is home from university.
