Spain scored twice in the last two minutes of the friendly at Wembley last night to grab a 2-2 draw when England had looked certain to win 2-0. “Well”, I said referring to England’s 3-0 victory over Scotland on Friday, “At least we beat the Jocks”. Jocks? My son is 21 and has obviously been over-exposed to US culture because he thought “Jock” meant “Arrogant American college athlete” not “Scottish person”. I suppose I should be proud that I’ve clearly never used this Pictist epithet in his presence. I think he needs to hear this song for two reasons: so he knows the traditional meaning of “Jock”. And because it will soon be the theme tune of the President of the United States.
My son had no idea what I meant.
