We’ve never been big on celebrating our national identity. We regard it as slightly vulgar and I love that. We’re not “proud” of being English. How can we be? Nationality is a mere foible of fate for which we can take neither credit nor blame. So saying “I’m English and proud of it” is a bit like saying “It’s Wednesday and I’m proud of it”. So no Rule Britannia, no Land of Hope and Glory – just a top tune picked at random. I may not be “proud” of being English but I’m still absolutely delighted that I am. Because ironically, it’s our general disregard for flag-waving patriotism that makes me feel (almost) patriotic.
It’s St.George’s Day. (Apparently).
