It all started with Kasey Keller.

Before Brad Friedel or Tim Howard, Kasey Keller was the first American goalkeeper to play in the Premier League. He made his name at Millwall before moving on to Leicester City, Tottenham and Fulham. Though I’ll always remember him for referring to away games as “on the road” which sounded cool and quirky in his American accent. After a while, Keller’s quirk entered the lexicon of footballspeak and now everyone says it. It doesn’t sound as cool in an English accent but American expressions seldom do. “I’m good” instead of “I’m fine” is one example. And as for “Can I get a latte?” when you actually want the person behind the counter to get it for you – let’s not even go there.
