……for a radio slot I remember from the 80s. There was a DJ on Capital called Phil Allen whose late night soul show was essential listening on the way home every Saturday night. I used to see him in City Sounds in Holborn, stocking up on all the latest imports. After some serious funk, he’d slow things down a bit with a feature called “Kiss in the Car”. The track he played would be nothing like the insipid “love songs” that Steve Wright plays with a dedication from some provincial halfwit to his frumpy wife on their 19th wedding anniversary. This was proper grown-up, slowed down soul for twentysomethings kissing in Cortinas because they had nowhere else to go. Sexy but somehow innocent, I do hope that this noble tradition lives on.
Steve Wright’s Sunday Love Songs are a very poor substitute…
