Here’s a minor hit from 1987 by a band fronted by my old friend Steve Elson. When it made the charts, everyone remarked how much like The Rolling Stones they sounded. So Steve had a brilliant idea – disband Broken English and form The Counterfeit Stones, the best tribute band you will ever see. I used to support them on gigs and loved plugging my DJ decks into their massive PA system and towering stacks of speakers. They went from strength to strength because they’re such great musicians and Steve makes a better Mick Jagger than Sir Michael himself. I once saw both bands within a few weeks of each other and remember thinking that The Rolling Stones were now just the counterfeit Counterfeit Stones.
More like The Stones than The Stones.
