…..was jazz-funk night and the DJ played all the latest US imports. When he went on holiday, I was asked to stand in, but I didn’t have a jazz-funk collection like his. However, I reasoned, he wouldn’t have a dreadful old singalong collection like mine, so I brought two boxes of these instead. I put the first one on, wondering whether I’d get booed, lynched or both. I needn’t have worried. Delilah, I’m a Believer and Is This the Way to Amarillo were all sung loudly and lustily. As they would be again when karaoke swept the nation. This was a big favourite, so when the cool jazz-funk DJ returned, I wonder how he felt about having to go into Woolworth’s to buy Engelbert’s Greatest Hits.
