Someone must, but it’s hard to imagine who. If you grow up in or around Manchester, surely you’d pledge your allegiance to either United or City. At a push, maybe Oldham who have at least played in the Premier League. Or perhaps Bolton whose stint in the top flight was much longer, more recent and more successful. But Bury? Who supports the team with the shortest name in the Football League? Maybe the great Guy Garvey, who comes from Bury, but I doubt it. Yet this has been a great week for their supporters because Bury have been promoted to League One. Next season they’ll be playing in the same division as Bolton. And right now, given the current travails at Old Trafford, that tiny band of fans will be genuinely delighted that they chose Bury over Man Utd.
