Especially on the first anniversary of his death but, well, I’ve never been a huge Prince fan. I thought he was fantastic – brilliant musician and an astonishing live performer. He was phenomenally talented but although I quite like a lot of his records, I’m not mad about any of them. I saw him at Wembley when he was at his peak but if I’m honest, it was a bit like Ken Dodd at the Liverpool Empire – it went on a bit. The show lacked musical precision and ironically lacked soul. Maybe Prince had too many influences. He seemed to be a conflation of James Brown, Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. And on this particular track, Russell Tompkins Jnr.
I’m not supposed to say this, am I?
