Don’t worry, I’m not talking about a loved one. Though in a sense I am. Woolworth’s was a much-loved feature of the UK high street, and it’s ten years since the final stores closed. We all have great memories of our local store, so I’m wondering if anyone else did this: Remove school blazer and roll up your right shirt sleeve. Put blazer back on and enter Woolworth’s on Wealdstone High Street. With enviable speed and skill, run the right cuff of your blazer along the Pick & Mix. Emerge from store with a generous selection – quite literally – up your sleeve. Here’s one of the many singles I bought from Woolworth’s on the way home from school. I may have paid for it. Or it may have “fallen” into my Adidas bag. Oh God, no wonder they went into administration.
Ten years on and we’re still mourning.
