Yesterday was Mayday Bank Holiday. It was dull, wet and miserable and yet Jeremy Corbyn’s cornerstone election pledge is four more Bank Holidays: St.George’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, St. David’s Day and St. Andrew’s Day. Has Corbyn never experienced the Scots supporting anyone but England in the World Cup? Or visited pubs in North Wales where they speak English until English people arrive, then start speaking Welsh? Or the Irish pubs in the Kilburn of my youth where anti-English songs were sung loudly and lustily? What a great idea. Re-open old divisions just as they’re starting to heal. Not to be outdone, UKIP will be busy trying to disprove the fact that the English are among the least racist and jingoistic people on earth. We have little desire to celebrate St. George’s Day. We’d actually rather sing this. And celebrate St. George Baker Selection Day.
Another four of those?
