Filming is apparently due to start on a biopic of Barry Sheene. I suppose the success of Rush, about James Hunt, meant that a similar film about Sheene was inevitable. They both won their first world titles in 1976, but Sheene was by far the bigger star. Every schoolboy of my vintage wanted to be Barry Sheene. Handsome, charismatic and cockney, he was the daredevil’s daredevil, surviving two horrific crashes to carry on racing motorbikes, dating models, drinking champagne and smoking fifty a day. What was so engaging about him is that he embraced fame but was totally unaffected by it. He survived the 170 mph crashes but it was the fags that got him in the end. It’s an incredible story and I hope the film does it justice. This is the one big hit that mentions him. Though somehow I can’t see it figuring in the soundtrack.
About time too.
