A comedy staple for as long as most of us can remember. Though not so much now. It’s quite rare to see a rug but the other day, I was sitting behind a man sporting a beauty. Not jet black and comically obvious, it was its near perfection that gave it away. It was authentically “greying” but the hairline was a little too low and the syrup itself a little too luxuriant and evenly groomed. And the more I looked at it, the funnier it became. The 1970s were the toupee’s heyday. Bald men were yet to accept and embrace hair loss by shaving their heads. In fact, the only men with shaved heads were Yul Brynner and Telly Savalas. This record – unbelievably – went to No.1 in 1975. Though for the full 70s cringe quota, Telly should have worn a really bad toupee.
There’s nothing like a toupee
