Toys R Us went into administration this week. Of course, it’s awful for the 3,000 people who could now lose their jobs but Toys R Us have had this coming for years. When my children were small, I went there countless times and detested every visit. Grim, soulless hangars designed to take you past long lines of sweets and toys before you could get either in or out. No thought, time or love was ever spent on making the stores magical places to go. Compare that with a traditional toy shop or the toy departments of Harrods or Selfridges? Even if you buy nothing, it’s magical. Toys R Us simply wanted people to spend as much money as possible while spending very little themselves. With their cynicism and greed, they almost took away the magic of being a child. Fortunately, old records like this will always bring it back.
