…can be summed up in this video. Yes, of course, we all love the BBC but the corporation can be its own worst enemy. Culture Secretary John Whittingdale, in preparing the Green Paper to decide its future, described the BBC as “most bloated, wasteful organisation on the planet”. Sadly as this grotesque, vainglorious promotion illustrates, he may have a point. The BBC boasted that it was “two years in the making”. Its cost has been kept secret but I know the public money spent on sound alone was eye-watering. Though that was nothing compared with the sums lavished on filming and CGI wizardry. But by far the greatest cost would have been the two years’ worth of salaries of BBC executives attending the hundreds of meetings deemed necessary to get this on air. All to tell us that the BBC broadcasts music. Who on earth thought this was a good idea? God only knows.
