…..is that he takes himself too seriously. He’s a bona fide rock god, immensely talented, phenomenally successful and in his 80s heyday, one of the most handsome men on the planet. By all accounts, he’s a throughly decent man but always comes across as slightly lacking in humour and humility. As a consequence, people don’t quite warm to him. Take this famous track. Sting’s original was a masterpiece – the lyrics, the musicianship especially Branford Marsalis’s superb soprano sax. Wonderful piece of music. And yet Shinehead simply nicks it, beefs up the beat, adds bit of toasting and makes the Englishman Jamaican. It may be just a knock-off but it has a vital element lacking in Sting’s version and in Sting himself. And that element is fun.
The trouble with Sting.
