Today we commemorate 20th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana. I met her once in the late 80s. The Hammersmith Palais had been refurbished and re-launched as “Le Palais”. Bit glitzy, bit naff, so of course I was the DJ on the opening night. All proceeds were going to the Prince’s Trust so Charles and Diana made an appearance. Diana wanted a look at the flash new DJ booth, so I dutifully showed her. I then heard myself say “Would you like to play the next tune?” She chose this one (probably because it was at the front of my alphabetically arranged singles box). I placed it on the turntable for her, and showed her how to cue it up. “When I say ‘Now’, press that button. Okay, ready?…Now!” And to huge applause, on came Abba. Very much the dancing princess, she should have evolved into the dancing queen.
True story.
