Those who love Early Doors and those who’ve never seen it. For those in the latter category, it was a BBC sitcom, set in a Stockport pub, written by Craig Cash and Phil Mealey. I’ve known Craig for years, since I worked on an ad campaign for British Gas with him and Caroline Aherne in the mid 90s. Early Doors was genius – only twelve episodes – but inexplicably never re-commissioned. Undeterred, Craig and Phil adapted it for a stage show which came to the Hammersmith Apollo last Tuesday. It was fantastic. Standing ovation from a packed house. Craig was also the first DJ to play Oasis on radio. Without him, we might never have heard Cigarettes & Alcohol, which both feature heavily in Early Doors. Yet he remains modest, unassuming and exceptionally nice. If I’d done half of what he’s done, I’d be insufferable. Or should I say, even more insufferable.
There are two types of person in the world.
