RIP Sir Bruce Forsyth who died yesterday aged 89. He enjoyed an astonishing career, typified by that mid-70s accolade. When I think of showbiz, I think of Bruce Forsyth. He was a proper all-round entertainer. He could sing, dance, act, tell jokes and was the greatest compere and game show host this country has ever produced. And that’s what we’ll miss. Not just Bruce but the showbiz tradition he personified. Viewers of my vintage will remember him from The Generation Game, (even) older ones from Sunday Night at the London Palladium and more recent devotees from Strictly Come Dancing. But it’s that mid-70s Showbusiness Personality of the Year period that we mourn when we mourn Bruce Forsyth. A time when Saturday evening light-entertainment shows would “welcome special guests” like the New Seekers. And I think that’s why I’m getting a little sentimental over Brucie.
