I’ve only met two and I’m a big admirer of both. One is Victor Lewis-Smith and the other is Gordon Mac. I went along to my friend John Quinn’s big birthday bash last night and Gordon was behind the decks. South London soulboy turned successful entrepreneur, Gordon founded Kiss FM and it’s hard to think of anyone who has done more to popularise black music and revolutionise radio in this country than him. Yet last night, he was just a DJ and a proper one who knows how to tailor the music to the crowd. A good DJ plays the semi-familiar. Too obvious and anyone could do it, too obscure and very few people enjoy it. But when he dropped this semi-familiar gem last night, you knew that whatever else he’s achieved, Gordon Mac is still the DJ’s DJ.
