I did this morning. I woke up with this chorus on a loop in my head: “A fair affair”. Homophonic word play – genius. For some reason, my chorus was mixed in with that familiar hook from Serge Gainsbourg’s “Je T’aime”. Ah well, random things often get mixed up in dreams but, hey, even better. This is going to be a huge hit. A girl should record it, I thought. And while deciding whether that girl should be Beyonce or Katy Perry, I Googled “A fair affair”. To my dismay, I discovered that I hadn’t written it at all. It must have just been lying dormant in some cerebral crevice since the mid-90s. But if Beyonce or Katy Perry decide to cover it, I really can take the credit for that.
Ever woken up in the morning and think you’ve written a song?
