It’s because “My fair” is how Eliza Doolitle, with her cockney accent, would have pronounced “Mayfair”. So now you know. And this song is, of course, from My Fair Lady. Last night, I went to see something very different: “A View from a Bridge” at the Young Vic. So what connects this tune to that play? A View from a Bridge is set in Brooklyn in the 1950s. Vic Damone is from Brooklyn and this recording is from the 1950s so it’s sung by a………………Young Vic. All right, all right but that’s the beauty of having this little blog. Say what you like, play what you like. And I like both this light, romantic showtune and that dark, sinister play.
Ever wondered how “My Fair Lady” got its name?
