Imagine you’d been going out with a girl (or boy) for years. And in all that time, this person had treated you with either casual indifference or outright contempt. You’d given everything – love, passion and unswerving loyalty in the hope that things would improve. But if anything, they got worse until the inevitable happened and you split up. And then, almost immediately, he or she starting making a huge effort to please you. Doing everything you’d always dreamed of. This is how it felt yesterday to be a QPR fan. After an abysmal season in which they were relegated – their relationship with the Premier League over – they played with commitment, style and passion to come from behind and beat Newcastle 2-1. Why couldn’t they have done this before? Didn’t they realise that the saddest words in the English language are “too late”?
The worst sort of relationship.
